9 weeks to go, and a ton to do! Our anchor text for Q4 is Persepolis, a graphic novel that tells the story of a girl growing up during the Iranian Revolution. We will be exploring autobiographies and cultural identities as we move through this huge unit, while at the same time getting ready for EOCs with distributed and interleaved practice.
There are two big assignments for Q4: a cultural autobiography due halfway through, and then a biography/research project based on those autobiographies due later in May. Once we have finished these two projects we will watch the film version of Persepolis and really dig in to EOC work. EOC is May 31st.

Quarter 3 is wrapping up! Our summative project is going to be a film containing about 3 important scenes from Things Fall Apart. All students will be involved in deciding, writing, and acting. Students will also be involved in pre-production activities like making wardrobes, creating backdrops, and scouting locations, and post-production activities like editing, sound design, and credits.
Quarter 4 will take us into our final novel, Persepolis. There are two versions of the book that are permissible class texts. The 1st volume has a red cover and is what we will be reading in class. The Complete volume has a blue cover and includes the 1st volume and a sequel. Either copy is fine. I've found that the 1st volume ends on such an exciting note that students (myself included) want to know the rest of the story. We will be using the Cultural Fair at the end of Q3 as our starting point for Q4. As students read Persepolis as an autobiography they will also be composing cultural autobiographies and examining their cultural intersections. Students will then interview a partner and conduct research on some of the cultural artifacts of their subjects for a biography and presentation. As the quarter winds down we will be engaged in test prep and review for the standardized finals, and we will watch the film version of Persepolis to look at how imagery in a text is translated to a screen.
